'Serene Cuisine' Menu 4/12/15

Hello Summer!

I'm not sure about you, but I can still remember what I was doing at this very time last year as though it was yesterday, and with less than a month until Xmas day, I truly don't know where this past year has gone....again!

Just quietly, I have not purchased a single gift as yet and although the list of loved ones I buy for is a short and very simple one, I still wish I had made a start.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Grinch, I do love Xmas, but I despise the commercialism that accompanies it, preferring instead to focus on planning the precious time I will get to spend with my loved ones.

As we count down the days until we all gather around the Xmas tree with family and friends alike, may your journey to the year's most anticipated day be a smooth and peaceful one.

This Week's Menu

Due to extensive outside catering commitments this week, Friday's 'Serene Cuisine' menu is an edited version with one main and one dessert on offer and with many other catering projects in my diary in the weeks leading up to Xmas, other Friday menus in December
will be streamlined also.

Sunday December 13th marks the date for the Xmas edition of the Mount Gambier Library Market, where I will have an extensive range of your favourite goodies on offer and will be the ideal opportunity for you to stock up.

The very popular Buddha Bowl is on the menu again with Roast Sweet Potato and Chick Peas, and a host of veggies, most of which will be picked fresh from my garden.
Topped with a selection of fresh bean sprouts and an Avocado and Lemon Tahini Dressing, this 'clean,' raw and amazingly nutritious power bowl will energise you for the whole day, and beyond.
Wholemeal flatbread is available as a side order.

This week's sweet selection is my ever popular Orange and Oatbran Muffin with a Chocolate Cacao Swirl, which contain freshly squeezed orange juice from locally grown oranges and a generous helping of fibre rich oat bran.

'Serene Cuisine' Menu 27/11/15

Santa is Packing His Sleigh

With a little over one calendar month until Christmas, I can hear the conversation shifting as I've interacted with folks throughout this past week.

There are those super organised individuals among you who have your gifts not only purchased, but creatively wrapped and strategically placed under an amazingly decorated Christmas tree in an equally amazingly decorated house, and then there's another group of people like me, whose trees are still boxed and in storage and whose gift list is still being mentally planned out in their heads.
I feel that there are more of us in the second group though....right??

Being a foodie, I probably spend more time planning the menu than I do planning decorations and gifts, spending far too much time procrastinating over the menu, and because I also love to give home made food as gifts to those I love, an awful lot of time is taken up the week before Christmas both baking and creatively packaging the finished products.

Although I seem to 'dilly dally' right up until the last minute, I'm fully immersed in the Christmas spirit right now, and feel like a little girl as the excitement builds between now and when Santa arrives in just a few short weeks.

On The Menu This Week

This week on the Friday menu, I am introducing a new Quinoa dish in the form of a Carrot and Quinoa Salad, which also contains brown rice and sultanas, topped with an avocado, mustard and balsamic vinegar dressing.
A Sweet Potato and Chickpea Patty with Caramelised Onions accompanies the salad making it a deliciously nutritious and very filling meal.

For those of you looking for a thick and nourishing soup, Chickpea and Veggie Soup is also on the menu which is also this week's gluten free option. If you're anything like me, I love a bowl of hot soup at any time of the year especially with a hot bread roll to soak up the last of the goodness.

Chocolate makes a return this week with my Oreo topped Chocolate Muffins appearing on the dessert menu as well as the Banana and Walnut variety.
The choice is entirely yours.....

Frank's Cookie Menu

On the menu this week for the first time is a selection of dairy and egg free cookies in a variety of flavours.

Cookies are available in packs of either 3 or 6 depending on the variety you choose and are also available by special order in larger quantities.

Feel free to contact me for larger quantity pricing or for any of your small catering requirements including morning/afternoon teas, baby/bridal showers office birthday parties etc.

Cookies will feature in Frank's Christmas Hampers and will also be available at the next Mount Gambier Library Market on Sunday December 13th.

'Serene Cuisine' Menu 20/11/15

Hello From My Kitchen

And here we are, about to launch 'headlong' into yet another week as we all begin to count down the weeks until Christmas.
I'm a lover of simple things and Christmas is no exception. The most important thing to me is sharing Christmas day and a delicious meal with my 'nearest and dearest,' and with the list of family members joining me now confirmed, I literally let the rest fall into place, apart from some informal meal planning.....No 'bells and whistles' here.

I am currently finalising 'frank's' Christmas contribution with some fantastic Christmas gift hampers on the drawing board as well as gift vouchers which are available for purchase now on the order form below Frank's Everyday Menu.
If you are looking for delicious, whole food, plant-based Christmas hampers, please contact me to discuss your requirements. I will have a selection available at the next Mount Gambier Library Market on Sunday, December 13th, with orders for hampers closing on Wednesday, December 16th.

On The Menu This Week

Two main meal options appear on the menu this week with the first of these being my twist on a traditional fried rice, with the addition of a delicious and colourful scattering of roasted sweet potato, while the second option is a nutritious and creamy Red Lentil Dahl containing potato, fresh fried onion and tomatoes.

Dessert this week is a Mini Banana Pancake Stack containing 3 light and decadent pancakes served with your choice of topping, either my Mixed Berry Syrup or everyone's favourite, Maple Syrup.
Please indicate your topping preference on the order form.

There's so much to choose from on the Everyday Menu too, with the list growing weekly.

Gardening....It's Cheaper Than Therapy

Gardening....It's cheaper than therapy, and you get tomatoes.
Have you heard that saying before?

It's so true, and yes, after the effort that's involved in preparing the soil, planting and tending whatever it is that you've elected to plant, there's a reward!

When I'm discussing the art of veggie gardening with folks and more specifically, the suggestion of them growing their own produce, the most common obstacle to them actualising this seems to be the 'apparent' lack of space in their backyards in which to grow a bountiful crop of organic produce.

Obviously, if a market garden is what you have in mind, the average suburban backyard isn't going to be anywhere near enough, but most folks only want to grow enough to feed between 2 and 4 people, depending on the size of their families.

I love gardening, and growing my own produce has been a life long passion for me, so I've opted to dig up 1/3 of my entire backyard and use it for food growing purposes including veggies, fruit trees and herbs.

Having this much ground put aside for such purposes isn't everybody's 'thing,' nor is it necessary in order to reap the benefits that are derived from growing veggies in your own backyard, and with a move towards smaller backyards or even a courtyard setup, a simple scattering of pots is all that's required.

With tomato planting season well underway, it's not too late to get a plant or two up and running to satisfy your family's tomato needs for the coming summers salads, sandwiches and with careful tending, even enough for some fresh pasta sauces.

The photo above right shows a large terracotta pot in my backyard which is home to a 'Tommy Toe' tomato plant, a cherry type tomato perfect for salads or for simply eating straight from the bush. Carefully staked as it grows in height and width, this variety will yield extremely well and makes for a very attractive potted plant.

If space is an issue and growing your own veggies is something that calls you, there are so many containers available that lend themselves well to this purpose, pots being only one.
I once used some old wooden drawers as seed raising boxes and have also tried my hand at pallet gardening, both proved to be very successful and come highly recommended.
I hope this information will help to unleash the backyard veggie gardener in you, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me via email or by commenting below.
I'd love to hear from you.

I hope to see you at the local nursery this afternoon!
Love and light,
Leah. <3

'Serene Cuisine' Menu 13/11/15

Welcome Back To My Kitchen

Wow!!! What a week it's been, not only here in the 'just frank' kitchen, but in life generally! (and yes, contrary to how it may appear, I do have a life outside of the kitchen!)

As I discussed in a previous post, I have been working on scaling back the time I spend in my gardening business in an effort to spend more time not only in the  kitchen, but in my rather large veggie garden as well, where I grow most of the veggies that go into making up each week's menu.

Long standing routines and habits are hard to re-formulate, and I am finding the process of condensing my gardening client list down to a more manageable level quite a challenge, with my addiction to busyness being the main obstacle, along with the incredible connections I have with my beautiful clients, most of whom are in their 70's and 80's.

Does the mere mention of being addicted to busyness resonate with you? I think if we are this way inclined, we tend to use our lack of free time almost as a badge of honour as we fill every available moment of our time with some form of activity.

I've had many a conversation about this in the past few weeks with some pretty burnt out and exhausted individuals, both men and women alike, all of who seem to be bemused at how they got to this point, nor do they have any idea how to 'hop off the merry-go-round,' and it's for this reason that I will be writing more on this topic in the coming weeks.

For those of you who have been following me here for a while, you will remember me sharing my de-cluttering journey late last year, which formed only part of the larger picture of 'paring' down in so many areas of my life.

If simplifying your life on any level is something that appeals to you, I hope some of the topics I will cover in the near future will be of some assistance and that you will quite clearly see that you aren't alone on this crazy journey.

Let's put the balance and serenity back into our lives....together.........

This Week's Menu

This week I have a delicious and nutrient-dense Burrito Bowl on the menu which will appeal to those of you who enjoyed the Buddha Bowl.

Bursting with beautiful fresh and colourful ingredients, topped with a delicious tomato salsa and served with a side of crunchy corn chips, my take on this Mexican favourite is sure to hit the spot.

With Broccoli still producing well in my veggie patch, I will be serving a Creamy (creamy in texture only...no dairy) Broccoli Soup which is also gluten free for those of you looking for this option.

This week's sweet treat is the Chocolate and Pecan Caramel Crisp Bar which debuted on the menu a few weeks ago and has been a favourite on the special orders list ever since.

Please check the 'Everyday Menu' below the Friday Menu for granola and hommus varieties that are on offer, as well as a  new gluten free Apricot Bliss Ball.

Getting My 'Ducks In A Row.....'

Thank you to those of you who have contacted me regarding this week's menu....
As some of you who may not be aware, I spend the majority of my working week in my business as a freelance gardener, providing gardening and home care services to a host of elderly folks in our community.
I am presently in the process of scaling this down to a more manageable level as I commit more of my time to providing nutritious and delicious meals to the ever growing 'just frank' family.
This week I have felt it necessary to spend some extra time on the scaling down process both on paper and physically, as well as taking care of some private catering commitments for several of my one on one clients.

I apologise for the absence of my regular Friday meals this week, but I promise you that there will be a long term gain in the coming months as I free up more time to be able to offer you a more comprehensive service. (Exciting times ahead!!)
The next Serene Cuisine Menu will be posted here on the blog on Monday 9/11/15 with deliveries taking place on Friday 13/11/15.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and for the constant feedback that you so generously provide.
This kind of personal contact with you, and the fact that I know together 'we' are making a difference, makes what I am doing here at 'just frank' so meaningful and worthwhile.
If you have any questions about upcoming menus, whole food, plant-based living or if you have any specific requests, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Love and light,
Leah. <3
